The essentials

What the dMAT changes for you

A short brief on each part of the new process. Tap any line to expand it.

What is the dMAT?

The dMAT (Digital Master's Admission Test) is a standardised online aptitude test conducted by g.a.s.t., the German test-development body — not by APS India itself. Where it applies, it becomes a mandatory part of your APS documentation, and the result is referenced on your APS certificate.

It evaluates general cognitive skills, analytical thinking and subject knowledge — not memorised facts. It does not replace APS document verification, anabin recognition, or a university's own admission decision.

Who actually needs it?

dMAT applies to Master's applicants from India whose previous degree falls under:

  • Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Electronics, etc.)
  • Business & Management (BBA, BMS, Marketing, HR, Business Analytics)
  • Commerce, Accounting, Finance & Economics
  • Computer Science & IT (CS, Data Science, AI, Cyber Security, Information Systems)
  • Other Technical & Applied Sciences (Industrial Engineering, Renewable Energy, Applied Sciences)

It does not apply to Bachelor's applicants, PhD applicants, confirmed exchange/double-degree students, or fields outside the groups above — Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences are typically excluded. The wording on your official transcript decides this, not your programme's marketing name.

Always verify against your exact degree title
Test structure & key dates

dMAT runs roughly 3.5 hours in one sitting, split into two 90-minute modules:

  • Core Module — Figure Sequences, Mathematical Equations, Latin Squares (general reasoning)
  • Subject Module — applies your analytical skills to problems from your own field

Why this is being introduced

Indian applications to German universities have risen sharply, and top programmes now draw thousands of applicants from institutions with widely varying grading systems. A standardised test gives universities a common, comparable yardstick — the same logic that made GRE a common differentiator for US applications.

That said, dMAT is newly introduced and, at launch, is used by a small number of universities. Admissions are becoming more competitive, not necessarily harder to navigate — early preparation is what makes the difference.

This page summarises the official APS India and g.a.s.t. announcement (29 June 2026) for planning purposes. Requirements can be refined as the first test cycle approaches.
