Planning a Master's in Germany? Your application may need dMAT.

The dMAT (Digital Master Test) is a standardised online aptitude test conducted by g.a.s.t., the German test-development body behind TestDaF and TestAS — not by APS India itself. Where it applies, it becomes a mandatory part of your APS documentation, and the result is referenced on your APS certificate.

It evaluates general cognitive skills, analytical thinking and subject knowledge — not memorised facts. All tasks are single-choice, in English. It does not replace APS document verification, anabin recognition, or a university's own admission decision.

All five conditions below must be true for dMAT to apply to you. If even one is false, you do not need it:

• You are applying for a Master's programme — not Bachelor's or PhD
• Your target intake is Summer Semester 2027 or later
• You started your APS registration on or after 29 June 2026
• You are not on an officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or university partnership programme
• Your previous degree is in one of: Engineering (incl. CS/IT Engineering), Commerce / Accounting / Finance / Economics, or Business / Management

It does not apply to Bachelor's applicants who haven't completed 5 (3-year) or 7 (4-year) semesters, PhD applicants, confirmed exchange/double-degree students, or degrees in Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, Architecture or Nursing. The official wording on your transcript decides this, not your programme's marketing name.

Interdisciplinary degrees — Data Science, AI/ML, Industrial Engineering, Financial Technology, Business Analytics, Hotel Management and similar — are not automatically included or excluded and need individual assessment against the official APS India affected fields list.

dMAT runs roughly 3.5 hours in one sitting, split into two modules:

• Core Module — Figure Sequences, Mathematical Equations, Latin Squares (general reasoning)
• General Academic Module (GAM) — applies your analytical skills to problems from your own field

The certificate is generally valid indefinitely. You can retake the dMAT as often as you wish — the next test date is planned for Q1 2027, with the exact date to be announced on d-mat.de.

In India, the dMAT is currently offered at g.a.s.t. centres in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune. It is also offered in Berlin (Germany) and Kathmandu (Nepal).

The final centre list — including exact addresses and available slots — appears during registration on the official g.a.s.t. portal. Popular centres fill quickly, so register well ahead of the deadline for your cycle.

Indian applications to German universities have risen sharply, and top programmes now draw thousands of applicants from institutions with widely varying grading systems. A standardised test gives universities a common, comparable yardstick — the same logic that made GRE a common differentiator for US applications.

That said, dMAT is newly introduced and, at launch, is used by a small number of universities. Admissions are becoming more competitive, not necessarily harder to navigate — early preparation is what makes the difference.

No. APS India states the dMAT is not a stand-alone pass-or-fail test for the APS certificate. A low score does not automatically cause an APS refusal — what matters for APS completeness is that the certificate is submitted. Your score and percentile rank appear on the certificate, and individual German universities decide independently how to weigh it. Most have not yet published a minimum cutoff. For the visa application, taking the dMAT is sufficient — no minimum score is required.

No. Both are required separately. APS India continues to verify your academic documents independently. The dMAT certificate is an additional document submitted alongside your APS file — it does not replace APS verification, anabin recognition, or a university's admission decision.

No. The first dMAT certificates are only available from 12 October 2026, after most Winter 2026/27 deadlines have already passed. The requirement applies to Summer Semester 2027 and later intakes only.

You're exempt. Applicants who completed the APS procedure and received a certificate before dMAT was announced don't need it for that completed procedure. Students who had already started APS online registration or shipped documents before 29 June 2026 also benefit from transitional exemptions.

Not automatically — interdisciplinary degrees are assessed individually. The official wording on your degree certificate decides, not the programme's marketing name. Consult an IMFS Germany counsellor before registering, since incorrect registration cannot be refunded.

The dMAT certificate is generally valid indefinitely and is required for the APS procedure. If you submit it directly to a university, that university may apply its own rules on how long a result is accepted. A result from September 2026 remains valid for the winter semester 2027 intake.

Yes — you can take the dMAT as many times as you wish, and you may also take it voluntarily even if APS doesn't require it for you.

The next test date after 26 September 2026 is planned for the first quarter of 2027. The exact date will be published on the official dMAT website (d-mat.de) once confirmed.

Your certificate shows two results: a percentile rank (the share of other participants who scored lower or equal) and a dMAT score on a 0–200 scale with a mean of 100. A separate score is reported for the Core Module and the General Academic Module, and the overall result is the sum of the two.

Yes. g.a.s.t. provides preparation materials for the Core Module and General Academic Module, sample questions, and introductory videos on d-mat.de. A demo version is available in your participant portal under "Exam Preparation". All questions are single-choice, and the General Academic Module has roughly 60 questions on average.
