GMAT Exam Format 2026 — Complete Breakdown

The current GMAT is the GMAT Focus Edition, launched by GMAC on November 7, 2023, which fully replaced the old GMAT (10th Edition) by February 2024. As of 2026, it is simply called the GMAT Exam. It is a computer-adaptive test (CAT) — question difficulty adjusts based on your performance for precise skill measurement. Accepted by over 7,000 programs worldwide.

📌 Key features of the current GMAT: (1) Section order is fully customisable at the start of your exam. (2) Question Review & Edit — bookmark and change up to 3 answers per section within remaining time. (3) No negative marking for wrong answers — but unanswered questions are penalised, so always attempt every question. (4) One optional 10-minute break between any two sections. (5) Calculator available for Data Insights only. (6) All Focus Edition scores end in 5 on the 205–805 scale.

GMAT Section-by-Section Breakdown

📐
Quantitative Reasoning — 21 Questions, 45 min

Tests mathematical reasoning and problem-solving. All questions are Problem Solving type. Topics: Arithmetic, Algebra, Data Analysis. Both Geometry and Data Sufficiency have been removed from Quant — DS questions moved to Data Insights. No calculator allowed. Section score: 60–90.

📝
Verbal Reasoning — 23 Questions, 45 min

Tests reading comprehension and critical reasoning. Two types: Reading Comprehension (passages ~350 words — inference, main idea, argument structure) and Critical Reasoning (evaluate arguments, identify assumptions, draw conclusions). Sentence Correction fully removed. Section score: 60–90.

📊
Data Insights — 20 Questions, 45 min

New section replacing Integrated Reasoning. Now also includes Data Sufficiency questions moved from Quantitative Reasoning. Five types: Data Sufficiency, Multi-Source Reasoning, Graphical Interpretation, Table Analysis, Two-Part Analysis. On-screen calculator available. Section score: 60–90.

💡 Data Insights is where most students lose marks. DS questions moved here from Quant are now in a new context — and the section adds four additional question types. The critical shift: DS requires you to determine whether data is sufficient to answer, not to actually solve. IMFS dedicates dedicated coaching sessions specifically to DI strategy.

GMAT Online vs GMAT Test Centre — Which is Right for You?

Both formats have identical content, difficulty, scoring, and global recognition. The choice depends on environment preference, budget, and scheduling flexibility.

🖥️ GMAT Online (At Home)

  • Take from home with a webcam and stable internet
  • Fee: USD $300 (~₹25,000–₹27,000 + 18% GST)
  • More date flexibility — wider scheduling options
  • Online whiteboard for scratch work (no physical paper)
  • Remote proctor monitors via webcam throughout
  • Official Score Report within 3–5 business days
  • Best for: students who prefer their own environment

🏢 GMAT Test Centre

  • Available at authorised test centres across India
  • Fee: USD $275 (~₹23,000–₹24,000 + 18% GST)
  • Physical laminated scratch paper and marker provided
  • Controlled, distraction-free testing environment
  • In-person identity verification and security check
  • Official Score Report within 3–5 business days
  • Best for: students who prefer a structured exam setting

💡 Not sure which to choose? Both are equally accepted by all business schools globally. The test centre exam is slightly cheaper. IMFS prepares students for both — speak to your branch counsellor based on your test date, environment preference, and comfort with typing vs. handwriting scratch work.

GMAT Score, Percentiles & Attempt Rules 2026

⚠️ Important — two score scales exist: The current GMAT Focus Edition uses the scale 205–805 (all scores end in 5). The old GMAT (retired Feb 2024) used 200–800 (scores ended in 0). The scales are not directly comparable by number — use percentile to compare. A 700 on the old scale ≈ 650 on the Focus Edition scale. Schools are aware of this and compare by percentile, not number.

Focus Edition ScoreApprox. PercentileOld GMAT EquivalentNotes
705~98th~750 (old scale)Elite — top 2% of test-takers
685–695~95th–97th~730–740 (old scale)Harvard, Wharton, Stanford median range
665–675~93rd–95th~710–720 (old scale)INSEAD, ISB competitive range
645–655~89th–91st~700 (old scale)Competitive for most top B-schools
625–635~82nd–86th~680 (old scale)Competitive for many strong programs
Score valid: 5 years · Attempts: max 5 per year, 8 lifetime · Minimum gap: 16 days · All Focus Edition scores end in 5

🎓 Note on student score cards: The GMAT scores shown by our students (760, 750) were achieved on the classic GMAT (200–800 scale), which ended in round numbers. The Focus Edition (205–805) uses a different scale — all scores end in 5. Both are equally valid, and business schools use percentile rankings to compare scores across editions.

IMFS GMAT Section-wise Strategy

Key strategies our faculty teaches for each section — built from 27+ years of GMAT coaching experience.

  • Quantitative — Eliminate Before Calculating

Many GMAT Quant questions can be solved faster through estimation, elimination, or plugging in values — not by working through full algebra. IMFS teaches question-type recognition so students know within 10 seconds which approach to apply. Accuracy at higher difficulty levels determines 700+ Focus Edition scores.

  • Verbal — Argument Mapping for Critical Reasoning

CR questions require identifying premises, conclusion, and assumption before evaluating answer choices. Students who attempt CR by “feeling” the answer consistently underperform. IMFS teaches a structured argument map approach that brings CR accuracy above 80% for most students within 3 weeks of targeted practice.

  • Data Insights — Two-Pass Strategy

With 20 questions in 45 minutes, time pressure is real. IMFS teaches a two-pass approach: answer the straightforward Data Sufficiency and Graphical Interpretation questions first, then return to complex Multi-Source Reasoning sets. Use the Question Review & Edit feature to flag uncertain answers and revisit before time ends.

  • Data Sufficiency — “Sufficient” Does Not Mean “Solved”

The most common DI mistake: students try to fully solve the problem rather than simply determining if the data is sufficient to answer it. You don’t need the answer — you need to know if the answer CAN be found from the given data. IMFS drills this distinction intensively. It alone can add significant points to your total score.

  • Section Order — Play to Your Strengths First

The GMAT allows you to choose your section order. IMFS recommends starting with your strongest section — this warms up analytical thinking, maximises accuracy in that section, and builds confidence for the remaining two. Your IMFS diagnostic mock results will identify your optimal order.

Frequently Asked Questions — GMAT 2026

The GMAT in 2026 is the GMAT Focus Edition with 3 sections: Quantitative Reasoning (21 questions, 45 min), Verbal Reasoning (23 questions, 45 min), and Data Insights (20 questions, 45 min). Total: 64 questions, 2 hours 15 minutes. Score: 205–805 (all scores end in 5). Computer-adaptive. Section order is flexible. One optional 10-minute break. Question Review & Edit allows changing up to 3 answers per section. Removed: AWA, Sentence Correction, traditional Geometry, Data Sufficiency from Quant (moved to Data Insights).
The GMAT fee in India is USD $275 (approximately ₹23,000–₹24,000 + 18% GST) for a test-centre exam, and USD $300 (approximately ₹25,000–₹27,000 + 18% GST) for the GMAT Online exam. The exact INR amount varies with the exchange rate — verify at checkout on mba.com. On the current Focus Edition (205–805) scale, a score of 645–655 is equivalent to a 700 on the old GMAT and is competitive for many strong programs. For top programs like Harvard, Wharton, and Stanford (whose median class scores were ~730–740 on the old scale), a Focus Edition score of 685+ is typically needed. For ISB, LBS, and HEC Paris, around 655–675 is competitive. Schools compare by percentile, not raw number, as the two scales differ.
The GMAT Focus Edition replaced the old GMAT (10th Edition) by February 2024. As of 2026 it is simply called the GMAT Exam. Removed: Analytical Writing Assessment, Sentence Correction from Verbal, Geometry and Data Sufficiency from Quant. Added: Data Insights section (includes Data Sufficiency moved from Quant, plus Multi-Source Reasoning, Graphical Interpretation, Table Analysis, Two-Part Analysis). Other changes: New score scale 205–805 (all scores end in 5); duration reduced from 3h 7min to 2h 15min; flexible section order; Question Review & Edit feature.
Data Insights (DI) replaced the old Integrated Reasoning section. Unlike IR (which was scored 1–8 and often ignored by schools), DI is a full scored section (60–90 points) contributing equally to your total score. DI also now includes Data Sufficiency questions moved from the old Quantitative section. Five question types: Data Sufficiency, Multi-Source Reasoning, Graphical Interpretation, Table Analysis, Two-Part Analysis. An on-screen calculator is available for Data Insights only.
You can take the GMAT up to 5 times in a rolling 12-month period and a maximum of 8 times total in your lifetime. A minimum 16-day gap is required between attempts. GMAT scores are valid for 5 years from the test date.
Most top MBA programs accept both GMAT and GRE equally. The GMAT is specifically designed for business school admissions. Some students score more competitively on one test than the other. IMFS recommends taking a free diagnostic mock for both before deciding. Our counsellors will advise based on your quantitative and verbal strengths and your target program list — this decision can meaningfully impact your MBA application outcome.
IMFS GMAT coaching includes: free diagnostic GMAT mock test, personalised study plan, section-wise coaching for Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights, adaptive full-length mock tests with performance analytics, expert mentor review of weak areas, weekday and weekend batches, retake coaching if needed, and integrated MBA counselling to align your GMAT score with your target programs. Available at all 13 IMFS branches.
