The Curricular Practical Training (CPT) program permits F-1 students to work off-campus in paid and unpaid positions directly related to their major field of study described on Page 1 of their Form I-20. Various positions can be authorized using CPT, including employment, internships, fellowships.
International students with an F-1 visa can gain work experience after graduation through Optional Practical Training (OPT). OPT applies for both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree.
The status of your F-1 visa remains the same. The CPT status is not an immigration status. A CPT is rather a benefit of F-1 status that authorizes off-campus training in one’s field of study.
