What Indian students need to know about part-time work abroad

  • Australia has the world’s highest minimum wage: AUD $24.95/hr (Fair Work Commission, 1 July 2025). At 48 hours per fortnight, monthly gross earnings are approximately AUD $2,595 (₹1.43 Lakhs) — among the highest of any study destination. Earnings above AUD $18,200/year are taxed at 19%.
  • Germany is tax-friendly for student workers: The annual tax-free allowance (Grundfreibetrag) is €11,604 in 2026. Most students working 20 hours/week at €13.90/hr earn approximately €14,516/year — slightly above the threshold. Part of this is taxable but the effective rate is low.
  • USA: F-1 visa restricts to on-campus work only: F-1 visa holders can only work on-campus during the academic year — 20 hours/week maximum. Off-campus work requires CPT or OPT authorisation. The $14.50 mean shown is approximate — actual campus wages vary widely by university and state.
  • Finland and Norway have no national minimum wage: Wages are set by sector collective agreements. Typical student jobs in hospitality and retail pay €10–12/hr in Finland and NOK 175–220/hr in Norway. Always verify the rate with your employer before relying on a figure.
  • Spain €9.55/hr applies to hourly and domestic workers: This is the confirmed rate from Royal Decree 126/2026 (BOE 19 February 2026). Typical student earnings in hospitality/retail are often €10–12/hr under sector agreements — higher than the statutory minimum.
  • Part-time earnings offset living costs significantly: In Germany, 20 hrs/week at €13.90/hr earns approximately €1,200/month gross — covering most of the ₹85K–1.1L typical monthly living cost. In Ireland, 20 hrs/week at €14.15/hr earns approximately €1,225/month — similar coverage. Use the Cost Calculator to compare with your estimated living costs.
