Purpose of an MS Resume
Your resume is not your job CV; it’s your academic and research identity in one page.
Admissions officers, professors, and research supervisors read it in 30 seconds or less.
It must clearly show:
- Who you are as a student and future researcher
- What you’ve accomplished academically and technically
- How does your experience support your chosen MS specialisation?
The golden rule: Clarity + Brevity + Relevance = Impact
- Ideal Structure of an MS Resume (One-Page Format)
- Header/Contact Information
Include:
- Full Name (bold and slightly larger font)
- Email (professional only, e.g., firstname.lastname@gmail.com)
- Mobile number (with country code)
- LinkedIn URL (and GitHub / Portfolio if relevant)
- Location (City, Country, optional)
Example:
@@@@Shah
📧 @@@@.shah@gmail.com | 📱 +91 98765 @@@ | 🔗 linkedin.com/in/@@@-shah | 💻 github.com/@@@shahDS
2. Professional Summary / Objective (2–3 lines max)
This is your 10-second elevator pitch.
Summarise your background, academic interest, and MS goal.
Example:
Final-year Computer Science undergraduate with strong foundations in Data Science, Machine Learning, and Cloud Computing. Experienced in real-world analytics projects and research internships. Seeking to pursue an MS in Data Science to advance expertise in AI-driven decision systems.
Avoid: “Hardworking student seeking to grow my career in your esteemed institution.”
3. Education
List most recent first. Include:
- Degree, Major, University, Graduation Year
- CGPA or Percentage (if strong)
- Relevant coursework (4–6 courses max)
Example:
@@@@@ University, Mumbai
B. Tech in Computer Science (Expected May 2025) | CGPA: 8.9/10
Key Coursework: Data Structures & Algorithms, Machine Learning, Probability & Statistics, Artificial Intelligence, Database Systems
4. Projects / Research Experience
This is the heart of your resume for MS admissions.
Include 3 to 4 strong projects, especially those linked to your specialisation.
Each entry should include:
- Title (bold)
- Duration
- Brief Description (2–3 lines)
- Tools/Technologies Used
- Impact/Outcome (quantify if possible)
Example:
Energy Consumption Predictor | Python, Scikit-learn | Mar 2024 – May 2024
Developed a predictive model to forecast household energy usage using time-series analysis, achieving 92% accuracy and reducing data noise by 18%.

5. Internships / Work Experience
Include only relevant professional experience (even part-time or internships count).
Format:
- Company Name | Role | Duration
- 2 to 3 concise bullet points showing impact and skill application.
Example:
Data Science Intern | Deloitte USI | May–Aug 2024
- Designed a client KPI dashboard integrating SQL and Power BI, improving reporting efficiency by 22%.
- Implemented clustering models for customer segmentation, improving accuracy by 18%.
6. Skills
List technical and transferable skills.
Group them logically (e.g., Programming, Tools, Soft Skills).
Example:
Programming: Python, R, SQL, C++
Tools: Power BI, Tableau, AWS, Git
Soft Skills: Analytical Thinking, Collaboration, Research Writing
Achievements/Certifications
Include awards, scholarships, publications, certifications, or competition wins.
Keep this compact, 2 lines if possible.
Example:
- Kaggle Titanic ML Challenge – Top 10% Global Rank
- Coursera: Applied Data Science with Python (University of Michigan)
- GRE 329/340 | IELTS 8.0
7. Leadership/Volunteering/Extracurriculars
Demonstrate global readiness, teamwork, and initiative.
Example:
- Vice President, AI Club – Organised annual ML Hackathon with 500+ participants.
- Volunteer, DBM India—Designed data dashboards for community projects.
- National-Level Swimmer – Demonstrates discipline and focus.
8. Publications/Research (if applicable)
- Cite properly: Title, Conference/Journal, Year.
📄 Example: Shah, A. (2024). “AI for Social Good: Data Science in Climate Policy.” International Journal of Applied AI Research.
II) Design & Formatting Guidelines
| Element | Rule | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 1 page (max 2 for exceptional cases) | Admissions panels prefer brevity |
| Font | Calibri / Arial / Cambria, size 10–11 | Consistency matters |
| Margins | 0.5–1 inch all sides | Maintain clean spacing |
| Color | Black text only | Avoid fancy templates |
| File Name | Firstname_Lastname_MS_Resume.pdf | Clean and professional |
| Verb Tense | Past for completed tasks, Present for ongoing | e.g., “Developed…” / “Leading…” |
| Action Verbs | Start every bullet with verbs | e.g., Designed, Analyzed, Created, Implemented |
III) Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Writing long paragraphs, bullet points only.
- Listing high school details, start from undergrad.
- Including personal details (DOB, gender, marital status).
- Using generic objectives (“to gain knowledge and experience”).
- Adding irrelevant hobbies or certifications.
- Using fancy templates that ATS systems can’t read.
- Forgetting to proofread, grammar errors = rejection.
IV) The “IMFS Resume Rule of 10”
Your resume should answer ten silent questions in under a minute:
- Who are you?
- What do you study?
- What is your academic performance?
- What are your technical strengths?
- What projects show your capability?
- What professional experience supports your interest?
- What awards or achievements back your credibility?
- How do you stand out beyond academics?
- What tools, languages, or technologies can you work with?
- Why do you look like an ideal MS candidate?
If your resume ticks all 10, you’re ready to send.
