What is the dMAT?

Source: d-mat.de and aps-india.de/dmat — accessed July 2026

The Digital Master Test (dMAT) is a standardised academic aptitude test developed by universities in collaboration with g.a.s.t. — the same body behind TestDaF and TestAS. From 2026, it is introduced as a new additional element in the APS India documentation and verification process for selected Indian graduates applying for Master's programmes in Germany.

The dMAT tests how you reason and apply knowledge — not how much you have memorised. All tasks use single-choice format and are in English.

Not a pass/fail gate APS India states a low dMAT score does not automatically cause an APS refusal. What matters is that the certificate is submitted.
Does not replace APS APS India continues to verify your documents separately. dMAT is an additional element — not a substitute for APS, anabin, or university admission decisions.
Winter 2026/27 exempt dMAT applies only to Summer 2027 and later intakes. Winter 2026/27 applicants follow the existing APS process with no dMAT requirement.

Eligibility

Who Needs to Take the dMAT?

All five conditions below must be true for dMAT to apply to you. If even one is false — you do not need it.

✅ All five must be true

  1. You are applying for a Master's programme — not Bachelor's or PhD
  2. Your target intake is Summer Semester 2027 or later
  3. You started your APS registration on or after 29 June 2026
  4. You are not in an officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or university partnership programme
  5. Your previous degree is in one of these fields: Engineering (incl. CS and IT Engineering) · Commerce / Accounting / Finance / Economics · Business / Management

✅ dMAT applies — plan now

  • B.Tech / B.E. (any engineering branch)
  • B.Tech Computer Science / IT Engineering
  • B.Com / B.Com (Hons)
  • BBA / BMS / BBM
  • B.Sc. Economics / Finance / Accounting
  • Management degrees with primary business focus

❌ dMAT does NOT apply

  • Bachelor's students (not yet completed 5/7 semesters)
  • PhD applicants
  • Exchange / double-degree students
  • Winter 2026/27 applicants
  • Already hold an APS certificate (from before 29 June 2026)
  • Degrees in Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, Architecture*, Nursing
⚠️ Interdisciplinary degrees — get individual assessment: Data Science, AI/ML, Industrial Engineering, Financial Technology, Business Analytics, Hotel Management and similar interdisciplinary programmes are not automatically included or excluded. The official wording on your degree certificate — not the programme's marketing name — is decisive. APS India publishes the official affected fields list at aps-india.de/dmat. Consult an IMFS counsellor at contact-us to verify your specific case before registering.

🧠
Core Module — General Cognitive Skills

Tests general reasoning and analytical ability — not subject-specific knowledge. Three subtests:

  • Figure Sequences — identify patterns in abstract visual sequences
  • Mathematical Equations — solve structured mathematical problems without advanced domain knowledge
  • Latin Squares — complete logic grids using deductive reasoning

These are the same analytical reasoning patterns tested in GRE Quantitative and SAT Math — structured thinking under timed conditions, not memorised formulas.

📚
General Academic Module — Subject Application

Tests subject-specific knowledge and the ability to apply it. Tasks combine a typical problem with related questions — requiring application skills, not purely memorised factual knowledge.

  • Field-relevant problems from your bachelor's subject area
  • Tests understanding and application — not rote recall
  • For the APS India process, the General Academic Module applies to all affected fields

Specific subject modules (Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science) exist for individual university programmes (e.g. RWTH Aachen MSc Battery Science) — these are separate from the APS India requirement.

How scoring works: The percentile rank shows what percentage of other participants scored lower or equal. A score of 70 means 70% of participants scored lower. Universities use the percentile rank — sometimes setting a cut score (e.g. select the top 10% of applicants). A higher percentile rank strengthens your application; a lower one does not automatically disqualify you for APS purposes.

IMFS dMAT Preparation

What IMFS Coaching Covers

IMFS has been preparing students for standardised aptitude tests since 1997. The reasoning skills at the core of the dMAT — analytical patterns, mathematical logic, structured problem-solving — are the same skills our faculty coaches for GRE Quantitative and SAT Math. We are applying that expertise to India's newest Germany requirement.

🔷
Core Module Preparation

Structured drills on figure sequences, Latin square logic, and mathematical equations. Same analytical reasoning framework used in GRE Quant coaching — adapted to dMAT format and timing.

📐
General Academic Module Strategy

Application-based problem solving for Engineering, Commerce and Business tracks. Focus on applying field knowledge — not memorising facts. Task-type exposure with worked examples.

⏱️
Timed Mock Sessions

Full-length timed practice under test conditions. 3.5-hour session structure. Performance review after each mock — understand reasoning gaps, not just correct answers.

🇩🇪
Germany Application Context

Common questions

dMAT FAQ — Everything You Need to Know

Is a low dMAT score an automatic APS rejection?
No. APS India explicitly states the dMAT is not a stand-alone pass-or-fail test for the APS certificate. A low dMAT score does not automatically lead to a refusal of your APS certificate. What matters for APS completeness is that the certificate is submitted — not the score itself. However, individual universities may use the dMAT percentile rank as a selection criterion for admission. Source: aps-india.de.
Does the dMAT apply to Winter 2026/27 applicants?
No. The first dMAT certificates are available only from 12 October 2026, after most Winter 2026/27 application deadlines have already passed. The dMAT requirement applies to Summer Semester 2027 and subsequent intakes only. If Germany is in your plan and you can be ready for Winter 2026/27, this is a genuine window — you follow the existing APS process with no dMAT. Source: aps-india.de/dmat.
Does the dMAT replace the APS certificate?
No. Both are required separately. APS India continues to verify the authenticity of your academic documents independently. The dMAT certificate is an additional document submitted alongside your APS file — it does not replace APS verification, anabin recognition, your transcripts, or university admission decisions. Source: aps-india.de/dmat.
What if I already have an APS certificate from before 29 June 2026?
You are exempt. Applicants who already completed the APS procedure and received their APS certificate before the dMAT was announced on 29 June 2026 are not required to take the dMAT for that completed APS procedure. Applicants who had already completed APS online registration or shipped APS documents before 29 June 2026 also benefit from transitional exemptions. Confirm your specific situation at aps-india.de/dmat. Source: aps-india.de.
My degree is in Data Science / Business Analytics / Industrial Engineering — do I need dMAT?
Not automatically — interdisciplinary degrees are assessed individually. The official wording on your degree certificate is decisive, not the programme's marketing name. APS India publishes the official affected fields list at aps-india.de/dmat. Consult an IMFS Germany counsellor at imfs.co.in/contact-us to verify your specific case before registering — incorrect registration cannot be refunded.
How long is the dMAT certificate valid?
The dMAT certificate is valid indefinitely — there is no expiry date. Source: d-mat.de.
Can I retake the dMAT if I am not satisfied with my score?
This is a newly introduced test and retake policies have not yet been published by g.a.s.t. There is only one scheduled test date in this first cycle (26 September 2026). Check d-mat.de and [email protected] for the latest information on retake availability for future cycles.
Does a strong dMAT score guarantee university admission?
No. Each German university decides independently how to use the dMAT result in its admission process. Some may set a minimum percentile rank cut score. Others may use it as one factor among many. A strong score helps; it is not a guarantee. Note also that a good dMAT score cannot compensate for a degree from a non-recognised institution — if your university has an unclear anabin status, address that first.
