Why Study in Australia? Top Reasons for Indian Students

Australia has emerged as one of the most popular study destinations for Indian students — combining world-class universities, strong post-study work rights, a safe multicultural environment, and one of the clearest pathways from a student visa to permanent residency in the Asia-Pacific region.

🏛️
Group of Eight (Go8) Universities

Australia’s Go8 — including Melbourne, Sydney, ANU, UNSW, and Monash — rank consistently in the global top 100. All are globally recognised by employers and governments worldwide.

💼
Post-Study Work Visa — Up to 4 Years

The Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) lets you work anywhere in Australia for 2–6 years after graduation depending on your qualification and study location. Note: The application fee is AUD $4,600 from March 1, 2026.

48 Hours/Fortnight Work Rights

Since July 2023, student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during term — up from the previous 40 hours. Unlimited hours during course breaks.

🌏
Gateway to Asia-Pacific Careers

Australia’s strategic location and strong trade ties with Asia create unique career opportunities across technology, engineering, healthcare, and finance sectors.

🤝
Safe & Welcoming Country

Australia ranks among the world’s safest and most inclusive nations. India is the largest source of international students in Australia — you’ll find a thriving Indian community in every major city.

🎓
Pathway to Permanent Residency

Australian graduates can apply for skilled migration visas through the General Skilled Migration program. Study and work experience in Australia counts towards your points for PR.

🎯 IMFS Tip: Australia is particularly strong for Indian students targeting careers in engineering, IT, healthcare, and accounting — fields that are historically in strong demand. Always verify current occupation lists at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au as these are updated regularly. Studying in a regional area can qualify you for additional PR points and a longer post-study work visa. Talk to an IMFS counsellor to plan your pathway from Day 1 — book a free session here.

Intakes in Australia — When to Apply

Australia offers three intakes per year. Unlike Canada, the February intake is the main one with 100% of programs available and recommended for Indian students:

🌟 Main Intake
February (Semester 1)
100% of programs available. Apply by October–November prior year. Maximum scholarship and visa appointment slots. Recommended for all Indian students.
🌿 Secondary Intake
July (Semester 2)
Good fallback if you miss February. Most programs available. Apply by April–May. Fewer scholarship options but solid intake for most disciplines.
🌊 Limited Intake
November (Summer)
Available only at select institutions and programs. Ideal for students who need additional prep time. Not recommended as primary intake for most programs.

📅 Application Timeline for February 2027: Begin IELTS/PTE prep by March 2026. Applications submitted by August–October 2026. Subclass 500 visa lodged by November 2026. IMFS manages this entire timeline for you from Day 1 — including GS (Genuine Student) statement preparation.

📊 GS (Genuine Student) Statement: From 2025, Australia replaced the GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) requirement with the Genuine Student (GS) test. Combined with India’s reclassification to Evidence Level 3 (highest scrutiny) from January 8, 2026 — where every bank statement and transcript is manually verified — a professionally prepared GS statement is more critical than ever. IMFS counsellors help you draft a strong, refusal-proof GS statement.

Australia Student Visa (Subclass 500) — Step-by-Step Process

The Student Visa (Subclass 500) is the standard visa for international students studying full-time in Australia. Applications are lodged online through ImmiAccount on the Department of Home Affairs website.

🚨 Important — India Evidence Level 3 (from January 8, 2026): India has been reclassified to Evidence Level 3 — the highest scrutiny tier — under Australia’s Simplified Student Visa Framework (SSVF). This means every bank statement, academic transcript, and supporting document submitted by Indian applicants is manually verified by the Department of Home Affairs. DIY applications are extremely high risk. IMFS prepares a complete, audit-ready application package to maximise your approval chances.

  • Get a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)

Apply to your chosen CRICOS-registered institution and receive an unconditional offer. Accept the offer and pay the initial tuition deposit. Your institution will then issue a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) — the primary document for your visa application.

  • Arrange Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

All students on a Subclass 500 visa must hold Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of their course. OSHC can be arranged through approved providers including Medibank, Bupa, AHM, CBHS, and NIB. Your university may arrange this for you.

  • Prepare the GS (Genuine Student) Statement

Write a detailed Genuine Student (GS) statement — the 2025 replacement for the former GTE requirement. Your GS statement must explain why you chose your specific course and university, how it fits your career plans, why you prefer Australia over studying in India, and your post-study plans. India is classified as Evidence Level 3 (highest scrutiny) under the SSVF as of January 8, 2026 — every bank statement and academic transcript is manually verified. IMFS counsellors help you craft a refusal-proof GS statement.

  • Gather Financial Evidence

Demonstrate sufficient funds to cover your tuition, living costs, and return travel. Acceptable evidence includes bank statements showing at least AUD $29,710/year for living costs (updated annually by DAHA), education loan sanction letters from recognised banks, or a combination. Funds must cover yourself and any family members applying with you.

  • Lodge Application via ImmiAccount

Create an ImmiAccount on the Department of Home Affairs website. Upload all documents — CoE, OSHC, GS statement, financial evidence, English proficiency scores, academic transcripts, and passport. Pay the visa application fee of AUD $2,000 (~₹1,07,000).

  • Biometrics (if required)

Some applicants are required to provide biometrics at a AVAC (Australian Visa Application Centre). IMFS will advise if this applies to your application based on your nationality and visa history.

  • Visa Grant & Travel

Processing times for Indian applicants typically range from 4–8 weeks. Once granted, your visa specifies your arrival date, enrolment period, and work conditions. You can arrive up to 90 days before your course start date.

🛂 IMFS Visa Tip: India has one of the highest student visa refusal rates globally for Australia due to weak GS statements and inadequate financial documentation. India’s reclassification to Evidence Level 3 (January 2026) means every application undergoes manual verification. IMFS has a 99.8% visa success rate because we prepare your complete application package — including your GS statement and document audit — before submission. DIY applications from Indian students are especially high risk.

Work Rights While Studying in Australia — 48 Hours/Fortnight

🟠 Key Update: 48 Hours/Fortnight from July 1, 2023

The Australian Government increased the work limit for international students from 40 hours to 48 hours per fortnight from July 1, 2023. This was originally a temporary COVID-era measure that was reinstated on a continuing basis from July 2023. Always verify current conditions at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. During registered course breaks (holidays), there is no restriction on working hours.

📅
During Your Course

Work up to 48 hours per fortnight during academic term. A fortnight is any 14-day period — not necessarily Monday to Sunday. Check your visa grant letter for your specific work condition. No restriction on the type of work or employer — you can work for multiple employers simultaneously.

🌴
During Course Breaks

Work unlimited hours during officially registered vacation periods. For most universities, this means December–February (summer), June–July, and any semester breaks exceeding 2 weeks.

💰
Minimum Wage

Australia’s national minimum wage is AUD $24.95/hour (from July 1, 2025). Most casual part-time work for students earns AUD $25–35/hour including casual loading. Working 48 hrs/fortnight earns approximately AUD $12,000–$14,000/year.

🏫
Family Members

Spouse/partner and dependent children of Subclass 500 holders may be eligible to work. Partners of master’s or doctoral degree students can generally work unlimited hours.

Post-Study Work Visa — Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)

🇦🇺 Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)

The Subclass 485 visa allows international graduates to live, study, and work in Australia temporarily after completing their degree. It is an open work visa — you can work for any employer in any occupation. Duration depends on your qualification and where you studied in Australia.

Post-Study Work Visa Duration — By Qualification & Location

QualificationMetropolitanRegional (Specified)Remote (Very Remote)
Bachelor’s Degree2 years3 years4 years
Honours Degree2 years3 years4 years
Graduate Certificate / Diploma2 years3 years4 years
Master’s by Coursework2 years3 years4 years
Master’s by Research3 years4 years5 years
Doctoral Degree (PhD)4 years5 years6 years

Regional Study Advantage: Studying at a university located in a regional or remote area of Australia (not Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane CBD) qualifies you for an additional 1–2 years on your Post-Study Work Visa AND may add additional points to your General Skilled Migration PR application under regional study provisions. Regional universities like Deakin (Waurn Ponds), La Trobe (Albury-Wodonga), and University of Wollongong offer this advantage. Note: The Subclass 485 application fee increased to AUD $4,600 (from March 1, 2026) — making it critical to plan your study location strategically to maximise visa duration and justify the cost. IMFS counsellors identify the optimal institution for your PR pathway.

Eligibility Requirements for Subclass 485

  • Must have studied in Australia for at least 2 years (16 months for some categories)
  • Must have completed a CRICOS-registered qualification at an Australian institution
  • Must be under 50 years of age at time of application
  • Must meet health and character requirements
  • Must hold or have held a student visa when applying
  • Applications must be lodged within 6 months of course completion

Frequently Asked Questions — Study in Australia from India

Tuition ranges from AUD $20,000–$52,000/year depending on the university and program. Go8 universities charge AUD $35,000–$52,000/year for postgraduate programs; other universities charge AUD $22,000–$38,000/year. Living costs add AUD $19,000–$42,000/year depending on the city. Working 48 hours/fortnight at minimum wage can offset AUD $12,000–$14,000 of living costs annually. Regional universities offer significant savings on both tuition and living costs.
The Subclass 500 is Australia’s standard student visa for international students studying full-time at a CRICOS-registered institution. It allows you to work 48 hours/fortnight during term and unlimited hours during course breaks, bring eligible family members, and study for the duration of your enrolled course. The application fee is AUD $2,000 (~₹1,07,000) and is lodged online through ImmiAccount. Processing typically takes 4–8 weeks for Indian applicants. A strong Genuine Student (GS) statement — which replaced the GTE requirement in 2025 — is the most critical element of a successful application.
Yes. Since July 1, 2023, student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight (a fortnight runs Monday to Sunday) during their enrolled course. During official course breaks and holidays, there is no restriction on working hours. Australia’s minimum wage is AUD $24.95/hour (from July 1, 2025), and many casual student jobs pay AUD $25–35/hour. Partners of master’s or doctoral students may be eligible for unlimited work rights.
The Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) duration depends on your qualification and where you studied: Bachelor’s/Master’s graduates in metropolitan cities get 2 years; graduates from specified regional areas get 3 years; graduates from remote areas get 4 years. PhD graduates get 4 years in metropolitan areas and up to 6 years in remote areas. IMFS counsellors advise on study locations that maximise your post-study work visa duration and PR points simultaneously.
Most undergraduate programs require IELTS 6.0 overall. Most postgraduate programs require IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0. Go8 universities typically require IELTS 6.5–7.0 for postgraduate programs. PTE Academic is widely accepted as an alternative (50–65 depending on the program). IMFS offers both IELTS and PTE coaching at all 13 branches — our coaches target the exact score your shortlisted universities require.
The Genuine Student (GS) requirement replaced the former GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) requirement in 2025. It assesses whether you genuinely intend to study in Australia and not use the visa primarily for work or migration. Your GS statement must explain: why you chose your specific course and university, how it fits your academic and career goals, why you want to study in Australia rather than India, and your post-study plans. Critically, India was reclassified to Evidence Level 3 under Australia’s SSVF framework on January 8, 2026 — placing Indian applicants under the highest document scrutiny tier. Every bank statement and transcript is manually verified. A weak GS statement is the most common reason for Indian student visa refusals. IMFS counsellors prepare your complete GS statement as part of our visa documentation service.
Australia has three intakes: February (Semester 1) — the main intake with 100% of programs available, recommended for all Indian students; July (Semester 2) — a secondary intake with most programs available; November — a limited intake at select institutions. February offers the most scholarship opportunities and visa appointment slots. For February 2027, applications should ideally be submitted by August–October 2026.
IMFS is a full-service study abroad consultancy serving students since 1997.
