Why Choose IMFS for GRE Coaching?

IMFS was the first institute in India to introduce GRE coaching. Our founder, Prof. K.P. Singh, is widely recognised as a pioneer in GRE preparation in India — and since 1997, we have mentored over 67,000 students into top graduate programs at MIT, Stanford, Georgia Tech, and universities across the USA, Germany, UK, Singapore and beyond.

We are not a standalone test prep centre. We are a full-service study abroad consultancy — which means your GRE preparation at IMFS is directly connected to your university shortlisting, SOP strategy, and visa process. We help you set the right score target for your dream programs and coach you to hit it.

🏆 8 Perfect GRE Scores — IMFS has produced 8 students who achieved a perfect GRE score. Most of our students improve their score by 10–25 points with personalised coaching by Prof. K.P. Singh and our senior faculty.

GRE Exam Pattern 2026 — New Format at a Glance

The GRE General Test was overhauled in September 2023 and this format continues through 2026. It is now the shortest, most focused version in the test’s history — under 2 hours, fully section-adaptive, with every answer counting.

🔑 Section-adaptive scoring: Your performance in Verbal/Quant Section 1 sets the difficulty of Section 2. A harder Section 2 means a higher potential scaled score. AWA is always first; Verbal and Quant can appear in any order after. Always give your best from question one.

📖
Verbal Reasoning

Reading Comprehension — passages with inference and analysis questions.
Text Completion — 1–3 blanks; choose the correct words from options.
Sentence Equivalence — choose 2 words that give the sentence the same meaning.

🔢
Quantitative Reasoning

High school–level maths: Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Data Analysis.
Question types: Quantitative Comparison, Multiple Choice (single and multiple answer), and Numeric Entry. On-screen calculator available.

✍️
Analytical Writing (AWA)

One 30-minute essay: Analyse an Issue. Present a reasoned position on a general statement. Scored by a trained human rater and AI — the average of both is your AWA score.

What GRE Score Do You Need?

ETS does not publish official cutoffs — scores required vary by university and program. Use this as a planning benchmark. IMFS counsellors will set your precise target based on your specific shortlist.

💡 For STEM programs (CS, Engineering, Data Science): Admissions committees weight Quant far more than Verbal. A Quant score of 165+ is a strong differentiator — even if Verbal is 155. Indian students naturally tend to score higher in Quant. IMFS coaching maximises both.

🌍 Beyond the USA: Germany (RWTH Aachen, TU Munich), Singapore (NUS, NTU), Switzerland (ETH Zurich), and UK (LBS, LSE) still require the GRE for most STEM and business programs — regardless of US test-optional trends.

IMFS GRE Preparation Strategy

Six principles Prof. K.P. Singh and our faculty recommend to every GRE student — distilled from 27+ years of coaching experience.

  • Start 6 Months Before Your Target Test Date

Early prep gives time for a retake if needed, allows gradual vocabulary building, and eliminates last-minute pressure. Most IMFS students who hit 320+ started 5–6 months before the exam.

  • Build Vocabulary Daily — IMFS InWords App

15–20 GRE words per day via InWords builds a 1,500+ word foundation in 3 months — enough to shift Verbal from 148 to 158+. Spaced repetition is built into the app.

  • Read Academic Texts Every Day

GRE Reading Comprehension draws from academic writing. IMFS provides curated reading material — physical and digital — via our Learning Portal to build comprehension speed and critical thinking.

  • Solve 20–30 Quant Questions Daily

Consistency beats cramming in Quant. Work across all four topic areas daily: Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, and Data Analysis. Review every wrong answer — understand the reasoning, not just the correct option.

  • Write One AWA Essay Weekly — Reviewed by IMFS Mentor

AWA cannot improve without structured feedback. Submit one essay per week to your IMFS mentor. Focus on argument depth, evidence quality, and structure — not just grammar.

  • Full-Length Mock Tests — Analyse Every Error

A full IMFS mock test every 2–3 weeks under real exam conditions. After each test, analyse mistakes with your mentor and adjust your plan. The pattern of your errors is your roadmap to a higher score.

Frequently Asked Questions — GRE 2026

The GRE General Test (updated September 2023, continuing in 2026) lasts 1 hour 58 minutes with 5 sections: 1 Analytical Writing task (30 min), 2 Verbal Reasoning sections (27 questions, 41 min total — 18 + 23 min), and 2 Quantitative Reasoning sections (27 questions, 47 min total — 21 + 26 min). Total: 54 questions plus 1 AWA essay task. No breaks. No negative marking. AWA is always first; Verbal and Quant appear in any order after.
A total score of 315 and above is competitive for most top-50 US universities. For elite programs at MIT, Stanford, and CMU, aim for 325+. For STEM programs, a Quant score of 160+ is a strong differentiator — even if your Verbal is 155. A score of 305–314 is good for most top-100 programs. IMFS counsellors will advise the right target based on your specific shortlist.
You can take the GRE General Test up to 5 times in any 12-month rolling period, with a mandatory 21-day gap between attempts. Most students who score below their target improve by 10–20 points on a second attempt with focused coaching. Universities see all scores unless you use ETS ScoreSelect to choose which to send.
GRE scores are valid for 5 years from the test date. You can use the same score across multiple admission cycles within this window — giving you flexibility if you choose to delay your application or apply to additional programs.
It depends on the university and program. Some US programs (MIT, UIUC CS) have made GRE optional. However, CMU, Harvard, Georgia Tech, and most top non-US universities in Germany (RWTH Aachen, TU Munich), Singapore (NUS, NTU), and UK (LBS, LSE) still require it. Even at GRE-optional schools, a strong score (315+) can significantly strengthen your application and improve scholarship eligibility. IMFS counsellors will advise based on your specific shortlist.
IMFS GRE coaching includes: a free diagnostic mock test at enrolment, personalised study plan, classroom coaching in weekday and weekend batches, exclusive IMFS InWords vocabulary app, physical and digital GRE study material by Prof. K.P. Singh via the IMFS Learning Portal, full-length mock tests with performance analysis, weekly AWA essay reviews, and integrated university counselling. Available at all 13 IMFS branches.
Both are accepted at most top MBA programs globally — Harvard, Wharton, LBS, INSEAD, ISB. For MS programs in CS, Engineering, or Data Science, GRE is almost always the right choice. For MBA, GMAT tends to be preferred at the most competitive programs. IMFS counsellors will recommend the right exam based on your target schools and academic profile. Read our GMAT vs GRE guide →
Yes. The GRE at-home option has the same format, scoring, and difficulty as the test centre. From January 5, 2026, ETS requires a second camera to monitor your testing environment. Strict proctoring rules apply. Most IMFS students prefer the test centre environment for fewer distractions and better focus.
