If you are applying to MS programs in the USA or Germany in 2026, knowing your target GRE score before you start preparing is not optional — it is strategy. Preparing for a 310 when your target university expects 325 means you will spend months and money to reach the wrong number. This guide maps out exact score expectations, university by university, for both destinations.

Why GRE Scores Still Matter in 2026 (Even When "Optional")
More than 60% of US MS programs removed mandatory GRE requirements between 2020 and 2023. Yet admissions committees at competitive programs continue to use GRE scores — just differently. Instead of using GRE as a filter to rule applicants out, they use it as a signal to move applicants up the shortlist.
Two applicants with the same CGPA, same research background, same SOP quality. One has a GRE Quant of 167. The other has no GRE. At a program receiving 2,000+ applications for 40 seats, the score tips the balance. This is not speculation — it is what IMFS counselors see in real reject/admit data.

GRE is not officially required at German public universities, and most German programmes do not evaluate it at all. In Germany, admissions decisions are driven primarily by curriculum alignment, ECTS compatibility, CGPA, APS certificate, SOP, and programme prerequisites. GRE is at best a secondary differentiator — and only relevant in specific high-demand programmes with heavy Indian applicant volumes, listed below. If you are applying only to Germany and your target programme is not in this list, read our complete guide to Germany MS without GRE →

| University | Program | Quant (competitive applicants) | Total Range | GRE Impact |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TU Munich (TUM) | CS, Informatics, Robotics, Data Engineering | 160–165 | 310–325 | High |
| RWTH Aachen | Data Science, Robotics, ECE, Mechanical | 158–163 | 308–320 | High |
| University of Stuttgart | INFOTECH, Computational Engineering | 155–162 | 305–318 | Medium-High |
| KIT Karlsruhe | CS, Electrical Engineering, Physics | 155–160 | 305–316 | Medium-High |
| Saarland University | CS, AI, Bioinformatics, Language Science | 153–160 | 302–315 | Medium |
| FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg | CS, Engineering, Medical Engineering | 152–158 | 300–312 | Medium |
The question is never "Does GRE matter for Germany?" The question is "Does GRE matter for my profile and my target programmes?" That distinction is where most Indian applicants lose ground silently.

📌 Important: These score ranges are NOT official cutoffs published by German universities. TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, and other German universities do not officially mandate or publish GRE thresholds. These observations reflect competitive applicant profiles in high-demand programmes with significant Indian applicant volumes during 2024–2026 cycles. Most German MS programmes do not evaluate GRE at all.
Of 212 Germany universities tracked in the IMFS University Recommender database, GRE relevance appears concentrated primarily in a very small group of highly competitive technical universities and STEM-focused programmes — not across the German university system broadly.
The real question is not: "Is GRE required for Germany?"
The real question is: "Which Germany profiles actually benefit from GRE — and which do not?"
That distinction is where most Indian applicants make expensive mistakes.
In IMFS Germany STEM applicant trend data, competitive RWTH Aachen profiles in Data Science and Robotics pathways frequently presented GRE scores significantly above the university's published minimum threshold. Real applicant competition pushes successful profiles substantially higher.
Most IMFS students targeting RWTH and TU Munich also prepare for USA simultaneously. Students with GRE scores of 316–326 have been admitted to Stuttgart, TU Munich, TU Dresden, and RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau.

Who Actually Benefits From GRE for Germany? — The IMFS Framework
Based on IMFS University Recommender data and counselor observations across 2023–2026 Germany STEM application cycles, GRE impact is highly profile-dependent.
| Profile Type | GRE Impact (Germany) | Recommended Action |
|---|---|---|
| CGPA 9.0+ from premier institution (IIT/BITS/NIT top) | Low–Moderate | GRE optional — academic profile self-speaks at most programmes |
| CGPA 8.0–8.9 from mid-tier or regional college | Moderate–High | GRE Quant 160+ recommended for TUM and RWTH targets |
| CGPA 7.5–8.0 from any institution | High (selective programmes only) | GRE strategic for top-3 Germany STEM programmes — not broadly useful. Already have a score? Check if a retake is worth it → |
| CGPA below 7.5 | Minimal impact | Fix curriculum gaps and prerequisite alignment first |
| CS / AI / Data Science targeting TUM or RWTH | Moderate–High | Highest Indian applicant density in Germany — GRE Quant 160+ strengthens position |
| Robotics / Mechatronics targeting RWTH Aachen | Moderate | GRE valuable specifically for RWTH — competition premium observed in data |
| Core Mechanical / Civil / Chemical Engineering | Low | Prioritise ECTS alignment and prerequisite match over GRE preparation |
| Applying to 200+ other German universities | Minimal | GRE not part of competitive dynamic at most German institutions |

How to Know Your Target Score Before You Start Prep
There is no universal "good GRE score." Your target score depends on three variables: the programs you are applying to, your CGPA, and your profile strength in other areas.
When NOT to take GRE for Germany
• You are applying only to programmes that explicitly state GRE is not considered (the majority of German universities)
• Your CGPA is 8.5+ from a strong institution — your academic record already speaks clearly
• You have less than 3 months to application deadline — inadequate prep time yields a weak score
• You are applying to non-STEM programmes (arts, social sciences, humanities)
• Your target programme has explicit language stating "GRE not evaluated"
GRE makes strategic sense for Germany when: You are targeting high-demand STEM programmes at TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, or Stuttgart; your CGPA is 7.5–8.4 (needs differentiator); and you are simultaneously applying to US universities — making preparation a dual-purpose investment.
