CMA India → 9 ACCA Exemptions: The Pathway Most Miss
The pathway step by step:
- Verify your 9 exemptions using the ACCA Exemptions Calculator at accaglobal.com with your ICMAI certificate details
- Register with ACCA and pay exemption fees for 9 papers
- Apply to UK or Irish MSc Accounting programme — Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds, Aston, Coventry London, UCD, Trinity Dublin
- During the 12-month MSc, sit the 4 ACCA Strategic Professional papers
- Graduate with MSc + full ACCA membership
ACCA membership also requires: completion of the Ethics and Professional Skills module and 3 years of relevant practical work experience (PER — Practical Experience Requirement). These can run concurrently with study. Passing the Strategic Professional exams alone does not confer full ACCA membership. Source: ACCA Global (accaglobal.com).
IELTS 6.0–6.5 is required. GMAT is not required at MSc Accounting programmes in the UK or Ireland. Full university data: ACCA → Master's Abroad guide.
CMA US → MBA in USA and Canada
CMA US is recognised in 150+ countries and is strongest as a signal in corporate finance, FP&A, and management accounting roles. For MBA applications in the USA and Canada, CMA US demonstrates management accounting and strategic finance depth that business school admissions offices value — particularly for applicants coming from finance and accounting backgrounds.
| Destination | Target programmes | Example schools | IELTS | GMAT |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USA | MBA, MSc Management Accounting | Kelley (Indiana), Ross (Michigan), McCombs (UT Austin) — any AACSB-accredited programme | 6.5 | Usually required — 600–680 typical |
| Canada | MBA | Rotman (Toronto), Schulich (York), Ivey (Western Ontario) | 6.5–7.0 | Required — 650+ typical |
Entry requirements from university official postgraduate prospectuses, August 2026. GMAT score ranges are typical admitted cohort figures, not official minimums. Verify directly with the university before applying.
What CMA US Does Not Give You
This does not reduce CMA US's value — it simply means it functions as a profile signal rather than an exemptions credential. It belongs in your application SOP, professional narrative, and LinkedIn profile. It tells admissions committees you have already cleared a rigorous global management accounting standard. That is genuinely valuable context for an MBA or MSc Management Accounting application.
ICMAI–IMA Membership Agreement
There is an agreement between ICMAI (Institute of Cost Accountants of India) and IMA (Institute of Management Accountants, USA) allowing Indian CMA members to apply for IMA membership. This allows ICMAI members to add CMA US credential to their professional profile. Verify current terms and fees directly with IMA (imanet.org) and ICMAI (icmai.in) — agreement terms and eligibility conditions are updated periodically.
Stacking Strategies
The two most effective combinations for Indian CMA professionals targeting international study:
CMA India (ICMAI, 5 years experience) → 9 ACCA exemptions → IELTS 6.0–6.5 → UK MSc Accounting (complete 4 ACCA Strategic Professional papers during 12-month MSc) → dual-qualified: MSc + ACCA membership.
Stack 2 — For USA/Canada (MBA):
CMA US + GMAT 650+ + IELTS 6.5 → MBA at Rotman, Schulich, Ivey, or Kelley → Canadian PR via Express Entry (skilled worker category) or US work visa.
Stack 1 gives dual-qualification faster and at lower total cost. Stack 2 gives MBA prestige and North American market access.
