Can I Do a Master's Abroad After My Professional Qualification?

A direct, honest answer for Indian students pursuing ACCA, CFA, CMA, CA, or CFP — what your credential gets you internationally, what it does not, and exactly what you need to apply.

Yesmost professional qualifications open master's doors abroad
IELTSrequired for every pathway — no exception
GMATrequired for MBA; may be waivable at select CFA-affiliated MSc programmes — not guaranteed

The most common question IMFS counsellors hear from professional qualification students: "I am doing ACCA — can I use it to get into a UK master's?" or "I cleared CFA Level 2 — will that help for MSc Finance in the US?" The answer differs significantly by qualification. Some give formal exemptions that shorten your master's timeline. Others work as profile signals. One requires a specific bridge to unlock international value. This guide answers the eligibility question before you choose which destination page to read.

ACCA membership also requires: completion of the Ethics and Professional Skills module and 3 years of relevant practical work experience (PER). These can run concurrently with study. Passing the Strategic Professional exams alone does not confer full ACCA membership. Source: ACCA Global (accaglobal.com).

What Are Exemptions and How Do They Work?

A formal exemption means a university grants you credit for a course or paper based on your existing professional qualification — you do not need to sit that paper or complete that coursework. This is distinct from a general profile benefit.

Only ACCA has formal exemption agreements with international universities at scale. The mechanism: ACCA has 13 papers across three levels. Indian students with B.Com and ACCA Applied Skills cleared typically have 6–9 exemptions available at UK and Irish MSc programmes. That leaves 4 Strategic Professional papers — the most advanced level — which you sit during your master's year. You study for both the MSc coursework and the ACCA exams simultaneously, graduating with both in 12 months.

Common misconception: CFA does not give exemptions. CMA US does not give exemptions. These credentials work as profile signals — they strengthen your application and sometimes replace the GMAT requirement, but you complete the full master's programme. This is worth knowing before you apply so you are not surprised by the full programme duration and cost.

Do You Still Need a Bachelor's Degree?

Yes, in almost all cases. International master's programmes require a bachelor's degree as the primary entry qualification. Your professional credential is supplementary — it either gives exemptions (ACCA) or strengthens your profile (CFA, CMA US).

The one nuance: some UK universities may consider a completed ACCA qualification (all 13 papers plus 3 years' experience) as equivalent to a bachelor's degree for MSc admission. This is institution-specific and rare. Do not plan your pathway on this assumption — verify directly with the university's postgraduate admissions office.

Indian degrees accepted: B.Com, BBA, BMS, BA Economics, B.Sc. (any discipline), engineering degrees. Non-commerce backgrounds are accepted at many MSc Accounting programmes specifically designed for career changers — particularly in Australia and New Zealand.

Do You Need GMAT or GRE?

Programme typeGMAT/GRE required?Exception
MSc Accounting — UK/Ireland (ACCA pathway)Rarely requiredACCA progress substitutes for quantitative evidence
MSc Finance — USA (CFA pathway)Often waivedCFA Level 1 or 2 cleared frequently waives GMAT at CFA-affiliated universities
MSc Finance — UK (Warwick, Imperial, LSE)RequiredTypically GMAT 650+ or GRE equivalent
MBA — USA/Canada/UKRequiredGMAT 600–700+ depending on school tier
MSc Accounting — Australia/NZ (ACCA pathway)Rarely requiredUndergraduate degree and ACCA progress sufficient at most programmes

IMFS coaches GMAT and GRE — and our counsellors will tell you upfront whether your specific programme requires a score, so you do not prepare for an exam you do not need.

Is Work Experience Required?

For MSc programmes (ACCA pathway — UK, Ireland, Australia, NZ): Work experience is not typically required. These programmes accept fresh graduates. The professional credential itself is evidence of applied learning beyond the undergraduate degree.

For MBA programmes (CFA, CMA US pathway — USA, Canada): Most top MBA programmes expect 2–4 years of work experience. Rotman, Schulich, Ivey, and similar Canadian schools typically want 3+ years. US MBA programmes at Ross, Kelley, McCombs typically want 3–5 years.

For the CMA India → ACCA exemptions bridge: The 9 ACCA exemptions specifically require 5 years of relevant work experience confirmed by ICMAI. With fewer years of experience, you receive fewer exemptions and enter at a different ACCA stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not typically. Most international master's programmes require a bachelor's degree as the primary entry qualification. Professional credentials supplement the bachelor's degree — ACCA gives formal exemptions from coursework, CFA and CMA US strengthen the application profile. A small number of UK universities may consider a fully completed ACCA qualification as equivalent to a bachelor's in specific circumstances — verify directly with the university's postgraduate admissions office rather than assuming.
ACCA: Yes — at UK, Irish, Australian, and NZ partner universities, academic credit (in the form of paper exemptions from ACCA exams, not master's coursework) is given. You still complete the full master's coursework, but the ACCA Strategic Professional papers you sit during the programme count towards both the MSc and ACCA qualification. CFA: No academic credit is given at any programme. CFA progress may waive the GMAT/GRE requirement but does not reduce the master's coursework or duration.
For most Indian finance and accounting professionals, yes — particularly if the goal is an international career or a role at a global MNC, Big 4, or investment bank. A master's from a UK, Irish, or US university provides global academic credibility that complements the technical depth of ACCA, CFA, or CMA. The specific combination of an MSc from a UK university (Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds) plus ACCA membership is recognised as a top-tier dual qualification by employers across the UK, Ireland, Middle East, and Southeast Asia.
Yes — and the ACCA dual-track model is specifically designed for this. You apply to a UK or Irish MSc Accounting programme while still completing ACCA Applied Skills papers. The university grants exemptions for papers already cleared and you complete the remaining Strategic Professional papers during the master's year. You do not need to finish ACCA before applying. For CFA, applying while at Level 1 or 2 is common and actively supported by CFA-affiliated universities.
