The New dMAT for Germany: What Every Master’s Applicant Must Know

A clear, verified guide to the Digital Master Test now entering the APS process.

Source Verified 30 Jun 2026

Dear students and parents,

Germany has quietly become one of the most rewarding destinations for the ambitious Indian student: world-class universities, strong industry links, and tuition that remains gentle on the family budget. With opportunity, though, comes a little more process. APS India has now announced an important addition to the Master’s application journey: the Digital Master Test (dMAT). This briefing explains exactly what it is, who must take it, who is exempt, and the one date that decides whether it affects you at all. Read it calmly and to the end. There is good news in here for anyone already planning to leave soon.

Preparation is never panic. It is simply doing the right thing a little earlier than everyone else.

01

What the dMAT Actually Is

The dMAT is a standardised academic aptitude test for Master’s applicants. It is being introduced step by step as an additional element inside the APS documentation — the verification that Indian students already complete before applying to German universities. The test is administered by g.a.s.t. (the Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development, through the TestDaF Institut in Bochum), while APS India continues to handle the verification of your academic documents.

In plain language: the dMAT does not test memorised facts. It measures how well you think, reason, and apply knowledge — the qualities German universities value across every discipline.

02

The One Date That Decides Everything

Before anything else, check which intake you are targeting. This single point determines whether the dMAT applies to you.

Not required

Winter Semester 2026/27

Studies beginning around September 2026. You follow the current APS process exactly as it stands today — no dMAT.

Required if affected

Summer Semester 2027 onward

The dMAT becomes a required part of your APS documentation if your field is on the affected list.

Please note If Germany is already in your plan and you can be ready for the Winter 2026/27 intake, this is a genuine window. You can complete your admission under the existing requirements, without the dMAT. Acting a little earlier saves a step.

03

Who Must Take the dMAT

In its introductory phase, the requirement applies only to applicants whose previous (undergraduate) degree falls within these fields:

  • Engineering
  • Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics
  • Business and Management
If your field is in between If your degree sits between areas — for example Engineering Management, Business Analytics, Industrial Engineering, Data Science or Financial Technology — your status is decided by the official Affected Fields List published by APS India, not by guesswork. Always check the published list before assuming you are in or out.
04

Who Is Exempt

You do not need the dMAT under the current procedure if you are in any of these groups:

  • Applicants for Bachelor’s programmes in Germany
  • Bachelor students who have not yet completed at least 5 semesters in a 3‑year programme, or at least 7 semesters in a 4‑year programme
  • PhD applicants
  • Applicants whose previous degree is not in one of the selected fields
  • Applicants in officially confirmed exchange, double degree, or university partnership programmes (submit the confirmation and group number with your APS documents)
05

How the Test Is Built

The dMAT has two modules:

Module 1

The Core Module

Measures general cognitive and analytical skills through three subtests. Think clear reasoning, logical thinking, and problem solving.

Module 2

Subject Module (General Academic)

Presents a typical problem followed by related questions, testing reasoning applied to academic problem-solving rather than recall. Single-choice format, in English.

Please note Although the published India page does not state the exact duration for the General Academic Module, the broader dMAT format runs for about three and a half hours, with a break between modules. Treat the precise timing as provisional and confirm it during registration on the official g.a.s.t. portal.
06

How You Are Scored

Your certificate reports your result on two scales:

  • Percentile rank: the share of test takers who scored lower than or equal to you. A percentile of 70 means 70 percent scored at or below your level. Universities may use this to set a cut score.
  • dMAT score: the total correct answers converted to a value between 0 and 200, with an average of 100.

dMAT score range

Crucially, the dMAT is not a simple pass-or-fail gate for your APS certificate. A lower score does not automatically cause an APS refusal, and the score does not decide whether your APS documentation is complete. What matters for completeness is that the certificate itself is submitted with your APS file.

Please note Because the first results are issued only on 12 October 2026, the dMAT is meant for the Summer 2027 intake and beyond. It cannot be used for the Winter 2026/27 intake — which is precisely why early applicants are unaffected.
08

What the dMAT Does Not Do

It is just as important to understand the limits of this test, so that no one is misled:

×

It does not replace anabin or the formal recognition of your university and degree. Check your institution’s anabin status before you register.

×

It does not replace APS verification. APS India still checks the authenticity and plausibility of your documents.

×

It does not replace your transcripts or grades. It is one additional element, not a substitute.

×

It does not guarantee admission. Each German university decides independently how to weigh the result. A strong score helps; it is not a promise.

Important A good dMAT result also cannot compensate for a degree from a non-recognised institution. If your university shows H+/−, H− or an unclear status in anabin, sort that out first — the dMAT will not override it.

The IMFS View: Your Next Steps

Here is the calm, practical plan we are giving our own students:

  1. Identify your intake first. Winter 2026/27 means the existing process and no dMAT. Summer 2027 onward means you must plan for it if your field is affected.

  2. Confirm your field against the official Affected Fields List. Do not assume; verify, especially for interdisciplinary degrees.

  3. Check anabin early. Recognition of your institution and degree comes before everything else.

  4. If you can move now, move now. Completing your admission under the current rules is the simplest path available this year.

  5. If you are heading to Summer 2027, prepare the aptitude, not the panic. The dMAT rewards reasoning and application — that is a skill you build, not cram.

  6. Register early once the window is open, and pick your test centre before the convenient slots disappear.

A new requirement is not a closed door. It is simply a sign asking you to walk through prepared.

Germany still welcomes the talented, hardworking Indian student with open arms. The dMAT is one more step on a path that has rewarded thousands before you. Walk it with clarity, start a little earlier than the crowd, and let us help you carry the load. That is exactly what IMFS has done since 1997, and exactly what we are here for now.

Procedures, dates, and fees can be updated by APS India and g.a.s.t. Always confirm the current details on the official portals before you register.
