9max ACCA exemptions for CA/CMA India holders

Indian commerce colleges are rapidly moving toward integrated professional programmes — B.Com + ACCA, B.Com + CFA, B.Com + CMA. Thousands of students completing these credentials every year have a global ambition but no clear map of where their qualification opens doors internationally. This page is that map. Each credential works differently — some give formal exam exemptions, others strengthen your profile, one requires a specific bridge to unlock international value. Choose your credential below.

ACCA membership also requires: completion of the Ethics and Professional Skills module and 3 years of relevant practical work experience (PER). These can run concurrently with study. Passing the Strategic Professional exams alone does not confer full ACCA membership. Source: ACCA Global (accaglobal.com).

ACCA — Strongest Exemptions Pathway

How it works: ACCA has formal university partnerships in the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Holders can enter an MSc Accounting programme with up to 9 paper exemptions built in and complete their remaining ACCA Strategic Professional papers simultaneously with the master's degree — graduating with both qualifications in 12 months.
Important — how the dual-track actually works: The university’s MSc curriculum is aligned to the ACCA Strategic Professional syllabus so you study the same content for both. You then sit the ACCA Strategic Professional exams externally through ACCA’s own exam sessions (December, March, June) — the university does not administer them or award ACCA membership. Completing the master’s degree does not itself confer ACCA membership. You must pass the external ACCA exams separately. Not all ACCA-accredited programmes offer this embedded structure — confirm with the specific university before applying. Source: ACCA Global Embedded Master’s programme (accaglobal.com).

CFA — Profile Signal, Not Exemptions

Key distinction: CFA does not give formal exam exemptions at any master's programme — this is different from ACCA. Its value is as a powerful admissions signal. At 200+ CFA-affiliated universities globally, CFA progress (Level 1 or 2 cleared) can support a GMAT waiver request at select CFA-affiliated universities — it is one factor alongside GPA and work experience, not a guarantee and differentiates Indian applicants in competitive MSc Finance admissions.

German public universities (TU Munich, RWTH, KIT) are not part of the ACCA embedded MSc network and do not specifically recognise CFA for GMAT waivers. Germany’s pathway for Indian MS applicants is ECTS + APS + dMAT. Germany MS guide →

GMAT required? Often waived at US CFA-affiliated programmes. Required at UK, Canada. GRE alternative? Yes — accepted at most US MSc Finance programmes.

CMA US — MBA and Management Accounting Pathway

How it works: CMA US does not give formal exam exemptions at master's programmes — this is confirmed by IMA official policy. Its value is as a strong profile signal for MBA and MSc Management Accounting applications at AACSB-accredited universities in the USA and Canada, signalling corporate finance and management accounting expertise.

CMA India — The Hidden ACCA Bridge

What most CMA India holders do not know: ICMAI qualified members with 5 years of relevant experience are eligible for 9 ACCA paper exemptions — the maximum. This opens the full UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand MSc pathway via ACCA. Additionally, the ICMAI–IMA agreement allows Indian CMA members to apply directly for IMA membership, adding CMA US to their profile.

Best path: CMA India (ICMAI) → 9 ACCA exemptions → UK/Ireland MSc Accounting (complete 4 ACCA Strategic Professional papers during the master's year) → dual-qualified: MSc + ACCA.

CA India — The Largest Audience, Specific Pathway

Important: CA India has limited direct global recognition at international universities — no formal exemptions at UK, US, or Australian master's programmes. However, CA holders receive 9 ACCA exemptions through the ICAI-ACCA Mutual Recognition Agreement, and are strong candidates for MBA programmes abroad via GMAT. This makes CA the credential with the most students and a clear, well-defined pathway.

CFP — Niche Pathway, USA and Canada

CFP (Certified Financial Planner) is recognised in 27 territories and does not give formal master's exemptions anywhere. Its value is as a profile booster for MSc Financial Planning and wealth management-focused MBA programmes in the USA and Canada. CFA Charterholders qualify for an accelerated CFP pathway — but not the reverse.
