What Is the dMAT Exam for Germany (and Who Needs It)?

The dMAT (digital Master Test) is an aptitude test that Indian graduates in engineering, commerce and business fields now submit as part of the APS certificate process for German master's programmes. It is run by g.a.s.t. (the German Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development) with APS India, and it applies to applicants targeting Summer Semester 2027 or later.

The first Indian sitting took place on 26 September 2026. It is not a pass-or-fail exam: you receive a score and a percentile, which are printed on your APS certificate. Universities then decide for themselves how to use it. If you plan to study in Germany, read the new dMAT requirement explained first.

dMAT Syllabus 2026: What the Exam Covers

The dMAT syllabus has two parts: a Core Module that tests reasoning, and a General Academic Module (GAM) that tests how well you read and apply academic material. Neither tests memorised subject knowledge, according to g.a.s.t.

What the syllabus does not tell you

Students who sat the first paper said the GAM leaned heavily on Class 11–12 science and maths, with fewer commerce passages than expected. These are the topics they recalled — candidates' recollections, not an official or complete list. No question is reproduced.

dMAT Exam Pattern 2026: Modules, Timing and Scoring

The dMAT is a digital, single-choice test in English that takes about three and a half hours including a break. You sit the Core Module first, take a 30-minute break, then sit the General Academic Module.

Scoring. Each module is reported as a percentile rank and as a dMAT score on a 0–200 scale with a mean of 100. The two module scores are added for the total. Certificates do not expire and are downloaded from the g.a.s.t. portal. More on how Germany uses the dMAT in master's applications.

How Difficult Was the First dMAT? Our Honest Verdict

The first dMAT was moderate overall but severe in two places: Mathematical Equations and the General Academic Module. Those two places are where scores will separate.

Within hours of the test, IMFS counsellors collected feedback from students across Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad through a post-exam survey, WhatsApp messages and a two-hour branch feedback session. The survey answers are below.

What this does not mean. These are IMFS students, prepared on IMFS material, describing the paper from memory. It is an honest signal of where the difficulty sat, not a measure of how all candidates performed. We will compare it with the percentiles when results arrive on 12 October.

Section-by-Section Analysis of the First dMAT

Mathematical Equations: the section that decided the day

Almost every student put Mathematical Equations at or near the top for both difficulty and time pressure. The first couple of tasks felt like the practice material. After that, students described systems of three or four equations in which letters were multiplied together or squared, so they behaved like quadratics. Several students told us they completed only 10 to 14 of the 20 tasks; one said that with 5–10 extra minutes he would have finished the rest. The clock is tight by design: 20 tasks in 25 minutes, about 75 seconds each, with no pen and no paper.

The official rules point to the method. Every letter is a whole number from 1 to 20 and every system has exactly one solution, which turns the algebra into number sense. A student who knows squares and factor pairs up to 20 finds the answer fast; a student who reaches for the quadratic formula spends the 75 seconds on the first line.

Figure Sequences: an easy start and a hard finish

Students found the first 15 or so items comfortable and the last few much slower. The hard items used several identical elements (same shape, same colour) that differed only in angle or position, with some turning clockwise and others anticlockwise. Students called it "different rather than harder", but the similar-looking answer options are where marks were lost. The discipline is to predict both frames completely before looking at the options, then compare one feature at a time: position, then colour, then orientation.

Latin Squares: the section everyone feared

Before the test, most guides expected Latin Squares to be the hardest subtest, because Indian students rarely meet the format. The opposite happened. Students placed it at the easy end, close to workbook level: a 5 × 5 grid with more letters already placed than in practice (students counted 8 to 13 in some tasks), solved with elimination and tracing. One student who had struggled with it in full-length practice found it the easiest part of the day.

General Academic Module: long passages, no home ground

Students reported 10 passages with 5 to 8 questions each, about 60 questions in 90 minutes, or roughly 9 minutes per passage. Every passage was long, usually four to five paragraphs, and almost all of them carried a graph, table or diagram. The mix leaned towards Class 11–12 science and maths, with one finance passage, a computer science passage and two social science passages.

Students felt that many questions needed some prior knowledge to read quickly, even though g.a.s.t. says everything needed is on the page. Both can be true: the passage supplies the rule, but knowing the vocabulary makes you read faster, and at about 90 seconds per question, reading speed becomes the score.

Was the Real dMAT Harder Than the Official Samples?

Yes, in two specific places. Most students found the real test harder than the official sample material, and none found it easier. The gap sat in the upper range of Mathematical Equations and in the length and breadth of the General Academic Module; Latin Squares matched the samples.

This is not a mystery. g.a.s.t. itself warns that the sample questions may differ in difficulty from the real test. Every preparation programme in the country, ours included, was built on those samples because nothing else existed. The samples turned out to be a floor, not the real paper.

We will not pretend our own material was the exception. Students told us the IMFS GAM practice passages were about half the length of the real ones, and our Mathematical Equations sets stopped short of the hardest systems they met. The new full-length dMAT mocks fix both.

Is the dMAT Only for Engineers? What Commerce and Business Graduates Should Know

No. Commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business and management graduates must take the dMAT too, but the first GAM leaned towards science and engineering. Students described it as "more science than engineering", with only one commerce passage, and several said a student without an engineering background would struggle with topics such as finite automata and physics.

For a commerce or business graduate, that means the GAM needs its own plan:

1. Revise Class 11–12 maths (probability, coordinate geometry, linear equations) until you can read it without stopping.
2. Build a working vocabulary in physics and chemistry: forces and motion, the periodic table, bonds and ions.
3. Practise reading diagrams, state charts and data tables inside a passage, not just prose.
4. Use your finance and economics strength to bank marks on those passages quickly, and save time for the science ones.

The same logic works in reverse: an engineer may meet finance options or a sociology passage. Nobody has home ground in this module. Planning a master's after a commerce degree? What dMAT Exam Day Was Actually Like

Exam day ran less smoothly than the paper itself, and conditions varied between centres. Knowing what to expect keeps a late start or a short break from costing you marks.

dMAT Result 2026: Date, Score and What It Means for Your APS Certificate

Results for the 26 September dMAT are due on 12 October 2026 on the g.a.s.t. portal. A paper that felt hard to you was hard for everyone else too, because you are ranked against the other candidates.

• What you receive: a percentile rank and a dMAT score on a 0–200 scale (mean 100) for each module, added for the total.
• Where it goes: the score is printed on your APS certificate. APS India has said a low score does not automatically lead to refusal of the certificate.
• How it is used: each university decides for itself. It matters, but it is not a pass mark.
• Before results: submit your APS file now if everything else is ready, since the dMAT certificate can follow. Check you signed the consent form at the centre; without it, your result cannot reach APS. If unsure, write to [email protected].
• After results: do not decide on a retake until you have seen your percentile.

How to Prepare for dMAT 2027: A Section-by-Section Plan

The first paper changes the balance of preparation: put most of your time into Mathematical Equations and the GAM, keep Latin Squares fluent, and rehearse the full day.
