Indian students need a National Visa (Type D) for long-term study in Germany. This visa is issued for the duration of your study program.
Book your visa appointment at the German Consulate in your nearest city (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore).
Bring all original documents + copies. Biometrics are taken at the appointment. Be prepared to answer questions about your study plans.
Processing typically takes 4–12 weeks. Avoid booking non-refundable flights until the visa is issued.
After arriving in Germany, register at the local citizens' office (Einwohnermeldeamt) within 14 days. Your 6-month validity period for driving with your Indian licence starts from this date.
A blocked account is a mandatory requirement for your Germany student visa. The German government requires you to deposit €11,904 per year (€992/month) before applying for the visa. Source: BAMF (bamf.de), 2026.
At 1 EUR = ₹108 (July 2026, SBI Forex), €11,904 equals approximately ₹12.9 lakh. Rates change daily — verify at IMFS before finalising your plan.
Most popular provider for Indian students. Setup fee: ~€89. Fast online process. Works with DKB Bank. Recognised by all German consulates.
Competitive option with bundled health insurance packages. Setup fee: ~€89. Good customer support for Indian students.
Newer provider offering competitive fees and quick setup. Suitable for students who need fast processing before visa appointment.
Traditional bank option — longer setup time (4–6 weeks), may require in-person visits. Not recommended if you are short on time.
💡 How it works: You transfer €11,904 into the blocked account before your visa application. After arriving in Germany, the account releases €992 per month to your German bank account automatically. The full amount is returned if your visa is rejected. Source: BAMF (bamf.de).

For your degree — yes. Over 1,500 English-taught Master's programs are available at German universities, particularly in STEM, engineering, business, and computer science. At universities like TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin, and FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, you can complete your entire degree without speaking a word of German. For undergraduate programs, however, German proficiency (TestDaF Level 4 or DSH-2, equivalent to B2/C1) is almost always required.
For daily life — it gets harder. Grocery shopping, public transport, government offices (Ausländerbehörde, Einwohnermeldeamt), landlords, and most part-time employers in Germany operate in German. Students without any German typically find their first few months significantly more challenging.
For your career and PR — German is not optional. Most German employers expect at least B1–B2 German for professional roles. More critically, your PR timeline is directly linked to your German level — B1 German enables PR in typically 21 months after employment, while A1 adds 6 months. Without B1 German, your long-term settlement in Germany becomes significantly harder.
IMFS recommendation: Start German at A1 before you leave India — even 3 months of preparation makes a measurable difference. See our German Language Prep (A1–B2) →
